Approximating multi-dimensional Hamiltonian flows by billiards

چکیده

The behavior of a point particle traveling with a constant speed in a region D ∈ RN , undergoing elastic collisions at the regions’s boundary, is known as the billiard problem. Various billiard models serve as approximation to the classical and semi-classical motion in systems with steep potentials (e.g. for studying classical molecular dynamics, cold atom’s motion in dark optical traps and microwave dynamics). Here we develop methodologies for examining the validity and accuracy of this approximation. We consider families of smooth potentials Vε, that, in the limit ε→ 0, become singular hard-wall potentials of multi-dimensional billiards. We define auxiliary billiard domains that asymptote, as ε→ 0 to the original billiards, and provide, for regular trajectories, asymptotic expansion of the smooth Hamiltonian solution in terms of these billiard approximations. The asymptotic expansion includes error estimates in the Cr norm and an iteration scheme for improving this approximation. Applying this theory to smooth potentials which limit to the multi-dimensional close to ellipsoidal billiards, we predict when the billiard’s separatrix splitting (which appears, for example, in the nearly flat and nearly oblate ellipsoids) persists for various types of potentials.

Billiards: a singular perturbation limit of smooth Hamiltonian flows.

Nonlinear multi-dimensional Hamiltonian systems that are not near integrable typically have mixed phase space and a plethora of instabilities. Hence, it is difficult to analyze them, to visualize them, or even to interpret their numerical simulations. We survey an emerging methodology for analyzing a class of such systems: Hamiltonians with steep potentials that limit to billiards.

Hyperbolicity in multi-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with applications to soft billiards

When considering hyperbolicity in multi-dimensional Hamiltonian sytems, especially in higher dimensional billiards, the literature usually distinguishes between dispersing and defocusing mechanisms. In this paper we give a unified treatment of these two phenomena, which also covers the important case when the two mechanisms mix. Two theorems on the hyperbolicity (i.e. non-vanishing of the Lyapu...

On Smooth Hamiltonian Flows Limiting to Ergodic Billiards

Suucient conditions are found so that a family of smooth Hamiltonian ows limits to a billiard ow as a parameter ! 0. This limit is proved to be C 1 near non-singular orbits and C 0 near orbits tangent to the billiard boundary. These results are used to prove that scattering (thus ergodic) billiards with tangent periodic orbits or tangent homoclinic orbits produce nearby Hamiltonian ows with ell...

Nonergodicity of the motion in three-dimensional steep repelling dispersing potentials.

It is demonstrated numerically that smooth three degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems that are arbitrarily close to three-dimensional strictly dispersing billiards (Sinai billiards) have islands of effective stability, and hence are nonergodic. The mechanism for creating the islands is corners of the billiards domain.
